Ko te amorangi ki mua, ko te hāpai ō ki muri. Te tuturutanga mahi pono, o te māori mana motuhake. Whano, whano haere mai te toki haumie, hui e, tāiki e.

At North Street School we offer a bilingual education which involves instruction in two languages, Te Reo Rangatira and English Medium.  The focus of the Bilingual Education at North Street School is to enable our children to be able to stand strong in both worlds of Te Ao Māori and Te Ao Tauiwi. Roimata Toroa means the ‘Tears of the Albatross’. It represents the cherishing and nourishing what we have been entrusted with and being able to overcome challenges along life’s journey.

Purapura Whetu Team

He taonga te mokopuna, kia whāngaia, kia tipu, kia rea.

A child is a treasure, to be nurtured, to grow, to flourish.

Welcome to Purapura Whetū - our shining stars. Year 0 to Year 2.

This team consists of four dedicated teachers:

Room 20 - Mrs Phoebe Archibald

Room 21- Mrs Kaylene Bennett (Team Leader) and Miss Sheryll Goodwin

Purapura Whetū is a collaborative learning space. Our approach in the first few years is focused on building strong emotional and academic foundations. We understand that children are 'ready' for learning at different ages and stages and therefore learning is not a race, it is a journey. We focus on our REACH values of respect, excellence, acceptance, creativity and honesty, while also incorporating the NSS backpack tools of resilience, questioning, mindfulness, reflection and curiosity.

Niho Taniwha Team

Welcome to Niho Taniwha (Teeth of the Taniwha). Year 3 & 4 students.

Our team consists of three experienced and dedicated teachers across two shared learning spaces.

Room 17 - Mrs Lacey Prince

Room 18 - Mrs Sarah Third

Room 22 - Miss Lucy Jordan

As a team we display resilience and persistence in all that we do - we accept challenges and enjoy taking risks and learning new things.  Niho Taniwha are engaged, connected and positive explorers.  Our learning stories are recorded on Seesaw so that our friends and whanau can be a part of our journey.  We have a great balance in our learning between hands on learning and technology.

TEARAMANGOPARE.jpg

Te Ara Mangopare Team

This is our Year 5-6 team.

Our team name Te Ara Mangopare (Hammerhead Shark) symbolises the unwavering strength and courage of our students as they travel different pathways in pursuit of their learning.

The teachers in this team are:

Room 9 - Miss Christine Hailes

Room 10 - Ms Allaynna Temata (Team Leader)

Our team name Te Ara Mangopare (Hammerhead Shark) symbolises the unwavering strength and courage of our students as they travel different pathways in pursuit of their learning.

We believe that in an inclusive classroom culture, all students can achieve. For this to happen, it’s important to know our learners really well and build strong relationships with their whanau too. In doing so, we are then best able to challenge their thinking and support them with the ‘tools’ they need on their journey to becoming lifelong learners.

As well as our day to day class programmes and team events, we also provide a number of different learning opportunities for our students to be a part of. They include academic challenges, physical and sport based activities, as well as EOTC (Education Outside The Classroom) visits e.g. Plant to Plate, Science Roadshow, Life Education, visiting Writers Workshops, Duffy Live Show, Camp…..

In keeping with the rest of the school, Te Ara Mangopare’s learning spaces are due to be renovated and updated this year.

What is the most important thing in the world?

It is people, it is people, it is people.

Poutama means Stairway to Learning and is this our Year 7 and 8 team.

Our classes are innovative, dynamic environments preparing our students for an easy transition to high school.  We value and encourage self-management, creativity and achieving personal bests. Everything we do at North Street Intermediate focusses on developing skills students will need to be ready for the unknown future.

The classes work in a collaborative way across the three rooms, so in essence, they are just one big learning environment.

Our students attend a Specialisation day once a week which is run here at North Street School. Subjects covered in these sessions are Robotics, Science, Hard Materials, Food Technology, Soft Materials, The Arts and many other specialist subjects.

Our teachers are:

Room 4 - Miss Lisa Woodward (Team Leader)

Other learning opportunities that are offered to our students are Elite Fitness, Epro 8, Kids Lit Quiz, International Languages, Career's Day, and Speech Competitions to name just a few.

Our students also have a chance to participate in the Elite Sport competition interschool sporting competition that involves 10 schools around the Manawatu/ Wairarapa. The sports include; Athletics, Basketball, Cross Country, Netball, Rugby, Touch, Football and a few more.

All Year 7 and 8 students have the opportunity to participate in the William Pike Challenge Award. William is a living legend, a popular inspirational speaker, and a role model for NZ youth, and he is a leader in the outdoor and education industries. William is a living, breathing example to people of all ages that anyone can overcome adversity and challenges, leading to a more fulfilling life.

The William Pike Challenge Award is an outdoor activity programme that provides Intermediate Schools, Full Primary Schools and community groups with support, resources and motivation to facilitate Education Outside The Classroom (EOTC). The WPCA is tailor-made to fit each group’s needs and provides a gateway to new experiences, opportunities and a means of developing a positive youth culture for the nation.
